Answers

What does TÜV stand for?
TÜV is an acronym for "Technischer Überwachungsverein". In English it means Technical Inspection Association.

How did the TÜVs originate 130 years ago?
In 1872 Gustav Schlieper established the first DÜV (Dampfkessel Überwachungsverein or Pressure Vessel Survey Association) in the city of Barmen. At that time, there had been a number of devastating steamboiler explosions, resulting in many injuries and casualties as well as factory closures. The association was founded to prevent such accidents by regular inspection.

At the end of the 19th century the idea that the state should protect its citizens from dangerous facilities was emerging. The German state of Prussia created an industrial code that gave the DÜV the right to assume certain inspection tasks on the government's behalf. Over time, the DÜV developed into the broader designation "TÜV".

Are all TÜVs the same?
No. In Germany there are several TÜVs such as TÜV Rheinland or TÜV Hannover. Historically, these TÜVs were locally restricted and worked only in their designated area. Since the Japan restrictions were abolished, the tougher competition has resulted in several mergers. TÜV Rheinland has recently merged with TÜV Berlin-Brandenburg.

When did TÜV Rheinland come to Japan?
30 years ago, TÜV inspectors visited Japan frequently to examine steel material that was to be utilized for nuclear power stations in West Germany. In 1978 TÜV opened a representative office in Tokyo. In the following decades, TÜV Rheinland Japan Ltd. opened offices in Osaka, Hiroshima and Kyushu as well as two safety testing laboratories in Yokohama and Osaka. The Tokyo Office moved to Yokohama and is now the head office of TÜV Rheinland Group Asia.
